1912 September 18 – birth of Jorge Ortiz

Singer (Virgo) – born in the neighborhood of San Cristobal in Buenos Aires, he began to study singing as a teenager…at the age of 21 he won a singing contest sponsored by Radio Cultura…his first break came when Azucena Maizani happened to hear him sing and was so impressed by his talent that she introduced him to the prestigious Radio Belgrano where he was promptly hired as a staff singer…

He made his debut on record in 1935 with “Dios Lo Sabe” and “Rosalinda”…his first film “Picaflor”, was  released on June 25, 1935, one day after Gardel’s death and consequently  a box office failure …In 1940 he was invited by Rodolfo Biagi to join his orchestra thus creating a mythical team of the 40s and a boom for the Odeon Label…he settled finally  in his beloved  Rio De Janeiro where he died of a heart attack at the age of  77
